(1.5) Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - it's not depression!

I include some information on SAD because I've sometimes had people come to me for help with depression who turn out to have SAD and could be better helped by other means. In particular, light box treatments are well-researched and not expensive. If you regularly feel down in the winter, a light box is well worth considering.

Also with insomnia, if your real problem is that you naturally don't feel sleepy until 3:00 am (or if you works shifts), a light box may give you good sleep very cost effectively.

Center for Environmental Therapeutics Medical researchers from Columbia University present interesting and usable information on SAD, early / late sleeping and rising (circadian rhythms) and selection and use of light boxes. Interesting questionnaires to determine your optimum time for rising and sleeping, and whether you have SAD.

A short article on light box research from Time magazine.

The National Light Hire Company One UK supplier of SAD and circadian rhythm lamps.(Also try "SAD light box" on Ebay.)

The Sun Box Company A US site with good articles on light boxes, SAD and disordered circadian rhythm.
