The Elements of Hypnotism by Ralph Harry Vincent (London; Kegan Paul, Trench and Trubner, 1897)

Published in 1897, this book surveys an eventful century in the development of hypnosis in Europe. Hypnosis is such a strange phenomenon (you read it here first - it is!) that Victorian investigators had tied themselves in knots working out what was real and what was fake, what was essential and what irrelevant, and just what the dickens was really going on. When Vincent wrote, things were finally starting to become clear after more than a century of passionate and heated debate with reputations made, and reputations lost. The picture of hypnosis he presents is crude, raw, and still ringing with echoes of magneto-Mesmeric nonsense. There are still some urban myths. But the main points are right. This isn't the Rolls Royce hypno-therapy which the next century would bring under Milton Erickson and many others. But it is recognisably a Model "T" Ford hypnosis.
