How many sessions?

An honest look at what is real in therapy

Brief therapy is cost-effective. Pivotal changes do not have to take long. A process of deep and lasting change can be quickly initiated.

Just how many sessions depends on the issue.  Quite often, to get life flying again takes a surprisingly few sessions. I do what works to get to the heart of the issue quickly.

I aim to be both inspiring, and honest. Here, inspiring means that people are often delighted how quickly change can happen – so go for it! Honesty means that the nature of human life is that that not all change is so easy. I make no promises that it is. Some issues take time and determination.

Some commercially-oriented quick-fix therapists make dramatic and ebullient claims. But if you look carefully, you'll often see that their "testimonials" date from three weeks, one week, even a few days after a session. These claims do not refer to true emotional healing and real life-change.

Of course it is true that many issues, even apparently intractable ones, do indeed need only a few sessions to shift life onto a new track. It doesn't take long for a railway train to cross a set of point which can send it in a completely new direction. But deeply-rooted major life-patterns take as long as they take. I certainly do not wish to be negative. But it is my professional integrity to be real.

Research shows that most commonly people see a therapist for between one and ten sessions at any one time. In that time, an enormous amount can be achieved. As an analogy, it doesn't take long at all for the points on a railway track to switch a train onto an entirely different path.

Serious issues, such as deep-seated depression of psychological origin, could take twenty or thirty sessions, though the clouds would start to lift long before that.

You should have a sense of real progress right from the beginning. It's like driving a car; you feel the clutch engage immediately. Then, the acceleration depends on how heavy the load is in the back. You should not wait session after session with nothing happening.

Some issues certainly take less than ten sessions. Simple phobias might take one to three, and simple habit eating one to four sessions. Chocaholism, crispaholism are typically just one to three sessions, as are other simple habits. Comfort eating might be in the four to eight session range, as might many panic attacks. (Link to the problem eating spectrum.) Smoking often takes only two sessions, though contrary to what almost all hypnotists claim, it certainly can take more.

Equally, serious issues can take longer. And the reality of life is that healing of deep-seated trauma or childhood loss unfolds and matures over a period of years, not weeks. No therapy can shorten that. However, you don't need to be doing therapy all that time! Pivotal change in a given moment can be rapid, and takes a number of sessions as outlined above. Maybe that is all the therapy you ever want or need. Or possibly the healing takes root and life carries on changing until another, aspect of the problem become ready for healing. And then some more sessions will help to go to the next level.

I aim to tailor the work to your unique needs very flexibly. It can be:

… whatever you need.
