Many symptoms of stress can also have physical causes. So be sure to check them with your GP.

For each question, score 1 if your answer is "occasionally / a little", 2 for "quite often / a good deal", 3 for "very often / a lot."

  3. Do you go to the toilet more than usual?
  4. Do you have butterflies in your stomach, or your mouth gets dry?
  5. Do you feel tired and exhausted?

  7. Do you suffer from aches and pains or headaches?
  8. Are you workaholic, or work until you can’t go on?
  9. Do you feel you have no time for yourself, eg for hobbies or enjoyable relaxation each day?
  10. Are you constantly irritable?
  11. Do you think 'I can't cope with this any more', or feel trapped?
  12. Have you lost interest in food, fun or sex?
  13. Do you eat too much or too little, or live off snacks and gobbled food?
  14. Have you lost your sense of humour?
  15. Have you lost interest in your personal appearance?
  16. Have you lost interest in other people?
  17. Do you feel that everything is pointless, or life is not enjoyable?
  18. Do you find yourself blowing up or tearful?
  19. Are you forgetful?
  20. Is it hard to sleep, or do you wake up in the night, or early, or unrefreshed?

Remember this is only an approximate general guide. Also, there are many other symptoms of stress. They include:

Feeling hopeless and discouraged, making a big deal out of small things, keeping everything inside, trying to do three things at once, thinking there is only one right way to do things, constantly complaining about the past, irritable bowel syndrome and heartburn, frequent urination, hyperventilating, weight loss or gain, impotence and loss of libido, high blood pressure, chest pain, cold hands and feet, back pain, jaw pain and tooth grinding, pulled muscles, workaholism, putting things off, increased time off work, tense unsatisfying breathing when you feel “I can’t draw a proper breath.”
