Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Have you got Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

If you have any upset in your bowel function, it is ESSENTIAL that you visit your GP. A diagnosis of IBS is made by eliminating other conditions, some of which are serious ones. Neither I nor any other therapist will help a patient without a clear and definite diagnosis of IBS from your GP. I cannot emphasise too much, DO NOT SELF-DIAGNOSE that you have IBS.

That said, here are the so-called "Rome criteria" for a possible diagnosis of IBS.

If you do have IBS, then hypnotherapy has a good success rate in treating irritable bowel syndrome. Remember, in September 2008 you can have the whole course of treatment half price, if you are eligible to take part in my research study.

You may have IBS if for any 12 weeks (not necessarily consecutive) in the previous 12 months, you had abdominal discomfort or pain that had two out of three of these features:

Supportive symptoms of IBS:

Red flag symptoms which are not typical of IBS:

Professor Whorwell's outstanding research shows that with IBS, hypnosis works. His method is a self-help one: there are (easy) exercises for you to do . If you are willing to do some simple and easily achievable work (eg as simple as listening to relaxation CDs) to take control of your bowel action, give me a ring: 0845-3510604 / 0117-968-7307. I'm happy to talk and answer questions. Remember, in September 2008 you can have the whole course of treatment half price, if you are eligible to take part in my research study.

"While many doctors may still be a little suspicious of using hypnotherapy [to treat irritable bowel syndrome], patients have no such qualms.
"They are falling over themselves to have the therapy, particularly the younger ones.
Many are on antidepressants, because they have the effect of lessening pain sensations at low doses.
"But if you're 25 and you had the option of a long-term course of antidepressants or having hypnotherapy that will put you right, which would you choose?"
